As with all singing formats, and all genres and ranges, there is a fundamental need to learn how to sing properly first before adding components of your preferred style. Practice, after all, makes perfect, and learning how to sing rock is no different. There are skills to be learned in order to enhance and be able perform at an optimum level.

The first thing is to learn what your natural range of vocals is, in order to find the place at which you are most comfortable singing at. This will allow you first and foremost to focus and harness your singing skills into a natural skill set, and secondly will allow you to sing songs which sound natural to your voice.  Only with practice, you will learn how to sing high.

Learning how to control muscles like the larynx and diaphragm in order to not only enhance projection, but to control notes and pitch too, is vital to being a consistent performer. It will also allow you to look after your precious vocal chords.

No part of singing should involve straining of any kind, and relaxation is another major factor in delivering a good performance. When muscles, and your body in its entirety is relaxed, better airflow and projection of the voice will be encouraged.

Once you have learned the basics of singing and have a comfortable range, you can start to expand and pick up advanced tips of how to sing rock. It is better to use a natural voice, and not one that imitates a famous artist too much, although it’s perfectly fine to be inspired to sound like them. Your own sound will invariably come across much better than any direct imitation attempts.

Throw in a little enthusiasm, along with a bit of dramatic flair to your performances, and you can enhance the singing experience further. Once the control of the breathing, diaphragm and posture comes naturally, then you can start experimenting with your range to stand center stage at the head of your rock band.
