How To Sing Metal

Let not the misconceptions about what you hear by established artists fool you into thinking that singing heavy metal is easy. Learning how to sing metal is not all unregulated shouting, screaming, yelps and guttural grunts. If you desire to break into this genre of singing, then chances are you will be aware of this already.
You will have listened and studied your favourite bands and artists and the natural instinct is to try and mimic those you admire the most. It’s a form of flattery, but trying to imitate your favourite metal band may only serve to hide your real, natural vocal talents.
There is a skill in mimicry itself, but people will more likely be drawn to hearing you sing naturally, within your own vocal range, without anything being forced. Even in the genre of metal, the techniques which underlie singing should never be forced in order to prevent damage to vocal chords.
Most metal singers will have first learned how to sing properly, within their natural range at first, and then developed further techniques like vibrato in order to sing consistently and at a high level within their preferred genre.
One technique to practice is to push, but not force in anyway, the air from your lungs out with the purpose of making a higher sound in the throat, sort of like the painful death throes of a lion to give you the gravely, raspy voice.
By simply starting to sing normally, you can then add a little extra to your natural range, pushing more dynamics up from the diaphragm. This will be a great way to start exploring further how to sing metal.
If you want to throw in some head banging along the way, putting into practice some of that shrieking and screaming, sounds which can be enhanced by placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth, you will be ready to thrash out your lyrics.
