How To Sing High

Improving singing techniques can be a continuous task, as singers often try and expand their vocal talents to encompass not only other genres of music, but to find different ways to express themselves through different tone and pitch.

Often the variances don’t work as your voice will have a natural tone, and certain songs in certain keys will be more suited to how you sound out your lyrics. But there comes a point in most people’s singing careers, when there is a need to know how to sing high notes.

Some artists can hit the higher range notes naturally, the Bee Gee’s and Mariah Carey spring to mind, but for those who need practice, there are exercises which can be worked on in order to extend your vocal range. It is more difficult to learn how to sing at a lower pitch, than it is a higher one.

Singing at this higher pitch will involve a shortening of the vocal chord, and that is where any training would be focused. Higher notes use less air, and therefore less overall vibration of the vocal chords. With less air being pushed through a shortened vocal chord, it means that an abridged chord can vibrate faster, therefore producing a higher note.

Practicing new ranges which are just out of your natural vocal range will help, because it will start to train your larynx muscles to act in a new or different way to what they are used to. It’s the equivalent of getting your leg muscles ready for a marathon, for it is unlikely to be a quick process. You will be training your throat muscles and diaphragm to endure more control.

One other technique lies in your stance. A good singing position is to stand upright, feet apart, hands slightly out to the sides in front of you. When you want to hit a higher note, simply start to raise your hands up and smile a little. When you want to go lower, start to drop the hands and the jaw.

Knowing how to sing high notes can unleash a new life into your performances, allowing you to expand your repertoire of songs with your new found vocal flair.
