You will have listened and studied your favourite bands and artists and the natural instinct is to try and mimic those you admire the most. It’s a form of flattery, but trying to imitate your favourite metal band may only serve to hide your real, natural vocal talents.

There is a skill in mimicry itself, but people will more likely be drawn to hearing you sing naturally, within your own vocal range, without anything being forced. Even in the genre of metal, the techniques which underlie singing should never be forced in order to prevent damage to vocal chords.

One other technique lies in your stance. A good singing position is to stand upright, feet apart, hands slightly out to the sides in front of you. When you want to hit a higher note, simply start to raise your hands up and smile a little. When you want to go lower, start to drop the hands and the jaw.

Your “head voice” is where all of your natural high notes come from, whereas the lower range of notes will come from your “chest voice.” Differentiating between the two and understanding their ranges, will allow you to focus and start to control the area in which you need to practice when learning how to sing falsetto.

At some point when you are singing and going up in your natural range, you will come to a break point, which will be the end of your “chest voice”. It is that barrier which needs to be broken through, the point where you are straining to get more out of your “chest voice”. What happens there is a feeling of shifting the resonance so that it sensed in the head more than in the chest. This is the place where the natural higher ranges reside.

To sing falsetto, or the “super head voice” is to sing with just a quarter of your vocal chords, the pitch being raised by less air vibrating against the outer edges of your chords. This is a practiced and skilled art, but one which is more naturally common than you may think.

Most women are naturally born with the skill to sing in falsetto. For the successful singer, it is simply about nurturing the talent to be able to seamlessly blend the two voices, the head and the chest together, when you want to move to different ranges.

As with any singing discipline, practice will only promote the skills that may be latent within you, and exercises which control the throat muscles as well as the diaphragm (which in turn controls the exhalation) can push you on to that higher range of knowing how to sing falsetto.

Like with anything, learning how to sing better takes practice. Control over breathing and muscles can help immensely with projection and tone, but also to be taken into consideration is the type of song that your voice is suited to.

Some, naturally deeper voices, may be better suited to slower melancholic songs, whilst others may be suited to a more upbeat, up-tempo composition. Finding your natural vocal range will help hone your skills by focusing on what you can achieve, rather than straining to sound how you think you should be sounding like.
